MANGEMENT AND COSTS.

Professor Andrew Long who is the Director of the Health Care Practice Research and Development Unit of the University of Salford is the research director. We are privileged to have found him because of his philosophical approach and because he is a pioneer in developing research methods appropriate to complementary therapy. The E.S.F. will do the project management, including fundraising and dissemination of the results. We are seeking partners to work with us on different aspects of the study, particularly the recognition framework and the legal aspect. We will only accept partners who share our approach to research, indeed we have already rejected some interested parties because their research approaches are too narrow.

Our intention is to submit the project for funding under the E.U.'s Fifth Framework Programme for RTD. If we are successful we will receive half the total cost of the project. If not we will withdraw the guidelines aspect of the study and adjust the timescale of the project and leave the documentation of some aspects until we have found the required funds. This will not in any way affect the integrity of the study, but will delay some of the results.

Pending finalisation of all the details of the project our current estimate of the cost is stg£150,000.00. over two years. We have to raise half of this amount and we have identified three sources to do so.
Firstly, the E.S.F. has a research line in its Budget which currently provides £7,000 per annum and because our financial year straddles two calendar years we will be able to make a three year contribution to the project of £21,000.000. National Association fundraising plans have a target of £60,000. by seeking contributions from all members and Schools. From plans already committed we know that £20,000.00 is assured. The proposal to be put to your Congress, if accepted, will yield £35,000.00.
Thirdly we are organising an appeal to sources supportive of shiatsu such as natural health products producers, but we do not know yet what this may yield. So, we are confident of raising more than £80,000.00.

If we do not get the E.U. funding we will work with less partners, have some of the analysis done by a doctorate student under Prof. Long's supervision and not include some of the charges of the University. We will concentrate on the survey of use, the safety and effectiveness and store the remaining data until we can afford to analyse it.

But, we cannot do it without YOU.

Firstly, the project needs your enthusiastic participation when it is ready to start in Spring next year. Your National Association will give you the details about that when we are ready to start. Right now we have to start collecting the funds. The G.S.D has the following plan which I sincerely ask you to support and thank you for in advance.
